Defending Olympic rugby 7s champions, Fiji started their campaign in Paris, France, with a 40-12 win over Uruguay. Joji Nasova scored an unconverted try in the first minute, while Uruguay responded with a converted try.
Waisea Nacuqu and Iosefo Masi combined to put Ponipate Loganimasi through for the national side’s second. Talacolo won a few kickoffs and played well overall. Fiji led 19-7 at halftime, with captain Jerry Tuwai leading from the front.
Coach Osea Kolinisau made a change at the break, replacing Sevuloni Mocenacagi. Nacuqu made a break and ran 60 meters to score before Uruguay replied with their second.
Sestino Ravutaumada, Kaminieli Rasaku, and Iowane Teba elevated the game, with Ravutaumada sealing the deal just before full-time.
The team secured their second win, defeating the USA 38-12 at Stade De France. The team, consisting of Joseva Talacolo, Iosefo Masi, Josaia Wini, Jerry Tuwai, Iowane Teba, Kaminieli Rasaku, and Selesitino Ravutaumada, started well, with Teba scoring the first try.
Fiji’s Drua stars Masi and Ravutaumada combined for Fiji’s third, with Masi scoring it. The game was one-way traffic in the first seven minutes, with Wini and Masi contributing to a 33-5 lead at halftime. Waisea Nacuqu scored in the second half, and Perry Baker added another try for the USA.
Fiji will face France in their final pool match at 1:30 a.m. tomorrow. The Men’s quarter-finals will kick off at 7 a.m. tomorrow, with the semi-finals starting at 1:30 a.m. Sunday and the final at 5:45 a.m. Sunday.
