Football Ferns captain Ali Riley has revealed that an ongoing nerve injury may end her professional career.
Riley, who has played 162 times for the Ferns and featured at five World Cups, admitted that her injury may be her last game.
She played an international friendly against Japan in May and admitted it could be her last game.
The injury ruled out New Zealand’s winless campaign at the Paris Olympics, eliminating them in the group stage.
Riley has been considering her post-playing career and expressed that her identity goes beyond what she can do on a soccer field.
In July, Riley shared on social media that she has been struggling with a nerve injury for the past seven months.
That has been frustrating, confusing, and excruciatingly painful.
The Ferns and ACFC medical and performance staff have done everything possible to help Riley recover.
Still, due to the unpredictable nature of the injury, her coach decided to withdraw her entirely from the squad.
