South Pacific Boxing Promotions (SPBP) promoter Fred Chand is seeking support from local businesses to back boxing in Vanua Levu, an area that has lacked a boxing program for nine years.
The last program was held in Labasa in 2015, and since then there has been a growing interest from boxers, trainers, and former boxers in the region.
Chand emphasized the North’s track record of producing top boxers, both amateurs and professionals, over the past decades.
He highlighted boxers such as Joe Keresi and Gyan Kumar, who secured Fiji’s gold medals at the Oceania Championship.
Other accomplished boxers from the region include Islam Shah, Mohammed Arif, and Osea Nakanacagi, who have won gold medals at the South Pacific Games.
Moreover, former Fiji title holders turned professional boxers include Isimeli Radrodro, Samuela Vocea, Inia Catarogo, Sakiusa Cawaru, Sikeli Veitala, Lorima Rakula, Noa Bukai, Nat Ledua, Setefano Vasuibau, Bobby Shah, and Atama Raqili.
Chand also mentioned that the program is providing numerous aspiring boxers in Vanua Levu with the opportunity to compete and showcase their talent.
He expressed openness to discussing sponsorship opportunities with any interested businesses. The main event will feature a 10-round international fight between Fiji super welterweight champion Winston Hill and Roy Ser of Vanuatu.
