Fiji and New Zealand both won their opening matches in the OFC U-16 Men’s Championship 2024.
Fiji secured a 1-0 victory against the Cook Islands with a goal scored by Rishal Shanker in the 96th minute. The Cook Islands had several opportunities to score but were ultimately unable to convert.
Fiji’s Tukai Ravonokula’s shot was saved by Tunui Tunui, and Josaia Raikoso’s volley was tipped over the crossbar. Kenya Enoka received a yellow card for a late tackle on Veleni Rasorewa.
Following a strategic move by coach Sunil Kumar, Fiji continued to push forward after making three changes at halftime. This decision proved crucial as substitute Rishal Shankar scored the winning goal in the second half, securing a vital three points for Fiji.
In the other match, New Zealand defeated Vanuatu 9-0 in a dominant display. Captain Alex Lienard scored the opening goal in the 20th minute, followed by Aaron Cartwright in the 29th minute.
Vanuatu defended deep throughout the first half but struggled to create scoring opportunities. Nickson Tari Bakeo came closest to scoring with a shot that hit the crossbar. Luke Brooke Smith, and Van Fitzharris added two more goals before halftime.
New Zealand, after making several changes to the team at halftime, continued their dominance in the second half. Nathan Martin and Aaron Cartwright each scored their second goal of the match, while Van Fitzharris also secured a brace.
With this comprehensive win, New Zealand is now set to face Fiji in the next round of Group A fixtures, while Vanuatu will prepare for their match against the Cook Islands.
