2024 marks a milestone for the Hamilton Fiji Netball Club as it celebrates a decade of tournaments, with 29 teams participating and showcasing its growth into a community and cultural hub in Waikato.
Founded by first-generation Fijian immigrants, the club has become a vibrant celebration of Fiji’s cultural heritage and strength.
Since its establishment in 2015 with only eight teams, the tournament has expanded to include 13 Open teams, 8 Veteran teams, and 8 Youth teams.
Teams from Sydney, Auckland, Hamilton, Rotorua, and Christchurch took part, creating a competitive yet inclusive environment that promotes physical wellness and cultural connection among the Fijian diaspora in New Zealand.
The competition was intense, with the Hamilton team securing their first Open division win and Highbrook Netball finishing as the runners-up.
The semi-finals and the final were closely contested, with just one point separating the teams, leading to dramatic lead changes and captivating the audience. The semi-finalists were Sydney-based GWS and Team Flamers.
Team Bula emerged as the winners over Auckland Sangam in the Veterans division, while the Christchurch-based Veilomani team claimed victory in the Youth divisions. Last year’s winner, Rotoviti, finished as the runners-up.
Team Flamers was honored with a 10-year trophy for achieving the most wins over the decade.
The tournament’s success is a testament to the dedication of its members. The generous support of long-term sponsors, including EDA Consulting Engineers, Nadan Enterprises Melbourne Australia, Murugan Enterprises Ltd, AR Photography, Wedding Glamour, Fairfield and Northcare Pukete Pharmacy, and NZHL Melville Brance, has nurtured the club’s growth and impact.
