Kennedy Simon, a 27-year-old rugby player, has extended her contract with New Zealand Rugby (NZR) and the Black Ferns through 2028.
The four-year deal is the longest commitment signed by a women’s fifteens player in New Zealand. Simon said it was not difficult, but she had to find an agent quickly. She said the decision was about securing a future and loving rugby with all her heart.
Simon, a 23-test Black Ferns co-captain, seized the opportunity to dedicate her time to rugby. Her confidence in her Black Ferns teammates following suit with long-term deals is a testament to the significance of her decision.
NZR Head of Women’s High Performance Rugby Hannah Porter echoed this sentiment, stating that Simon’s commitment to the Black Ferns programme is a significant milestone for women’s rugby.
Despite many of her teammates and opponents in Super Rugby Aupiki making the switch or contemplating offers from the expanding NRLW, Simon said her only interest was the fifteen-a-side code. She wants to look forward to making the World Cup squad and continuing to grow the legacy of the jersey.
Simon, who missed the Black Ferns’ latest test, a 62-0 victory over Australia, is eagerly anticipating their upcoming match against England at Twickenham on 14 September. She believes the fans’ passion and intensity will make it one of the most significant games of her career.
