The Solomon Islands have been eliminated from the OFC Men’s Nations Cup 2024 after a 3-0 loss in Port Vila. New Zealand will now face Vanuatu on Friday to determine who finishes top of Group A, with both teams guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals.

The Solomon Islands made four changes from their previous match, including goalkeeper Alex Paulsen and Sam Sutton making their international debuts. The decision to omit Rafa Le’ai was a major talking point as coach Jacob Moli opted for a more defensive lineup with five defenders.

Although the Solomon Islands have caused problems for New Zealand in the past, Coach Darren Bazeley was eager for his young team to establish themselves early and prevent their skillful opponents from finding their rhythm. Ben Waine doubled the lead 11 minutes into the match, and Gagame Feni’s powerful shot nearly found the top corner.

Coach Moli then changed to a more attacking formation, bringing on Le’ai, but the New Zealand defence, with Finn Surman and Tyler Bindon in the centre, held firm against the increased pressure.

Despite the Solomon Islands’ efforts to get back into the match, Le’ai’s shot went wide, and Javin Alick’s long-range effort didn’t trouble goalkeeper Paulsen.

These results determine the teams advancing from Group A, and the upcoming match between New Zealand and Vanuatu will decide the group winner heading into the semi-finals.
