Tahiti secured a 2-0 win in their opening match against Samoa in Suva, marking a significant start to their OFC Men’s Nations Cup 2024 campaign.
Despite a loss, Samoa put up a resilient effort, with two first-half goals. Matéo Degrumelle, a constant threat down the Tahiti right-hand side, nearly created a second goal when he crossed to the back post, but Shan could only side-foot his effort wide.
Captain Teaonui Tehau’s goal, a result of an Eddy Kaspard cross, was a strategic move that doubled Tahiti’s lead. On the other hand, Samoa grew into the contest towards the end of the first period, with Greg Siamoa making a break in the box, only to be closed down by Francois Decoret. Dauntae Mariner’s left-footed effort that hit the crossbar and went away to safety was a testament to Samoa’s tactical play.
The second half saw a notable drop in pace and intensity, possibly due to Suva’s hot and humid conditions. Tahiti pushed to add to their two-goal cushion but could not seriously test Bartley in the Samoan goal.
The victory gives Tahiti the perfect start to their campaign, and Samoa will look to rebound on match day two against co-hosts Fiji.
