Taxi driver charged with rape sentenced to 11 years imprisonment

Updated: 5:00pm – A 35‑year‑old man who was found guilty of raping a 16‑year‑old girl has been sentenced to 11 years imprisonment with a non parole period of 10 years.

Rajinesh Kamal Narayan raped a girl on 13th September 2016 at Suva Point at the back of his taxi.

In his judgement, Justice Salesi Temo stated that he found the complainant to be a credible witness.

During the summing up Justice Temo stated that the man had taken the girl to the backseat of his taxi and locked the doors so she could not escape.

He adds that when she had protested he had hit her on her ribs and then raped her.

Justice Temo highlighted that Narayan had exploited the naivety of a 16‑year‑old girl, he had raped her and then told her to go away.
