UPDATED: 6:35am – Trade Me is welcoming calls for an independent inquiry into how the Northland gunman was able to purchase a firearm without a gun licence.

Quinn Patterson killed two women on Wednesday after purchasing a gun via Trade Me, and Labour police spokesman Stuart Nash is calling for the government to lead an investigation into online sales.

Deputy Prime Minister and Police Minister, Paula Bennett, rejected Mr Nash’s calls.

However, Trade Me Head of Customer Safety, John Duffy,

said they support the calls for an inquiry as something has gone seriously wrong in this case.

“Any sunlight that can be shone on the process to make it better is a good thing, so we would support that,” Mr Duffy said. It’s not known if the gun bought through Trade Me was the gun used in the shootin.
