GeoNet reports a ‘”strong” 5.4 magnitude earthquake has been felt 30km east of Wairoa, in the North Island. The earthquake hit just after 6pm on Tuesday. The depth was recorded at 25km.
More than 3000 people have reported feeling the earthquake on GeoNet’s website. On GeoNet’s Twitter thread, some people from Napier and Gisborne have said they felt earthquake. One person commented saying “that was a long rocky one”.
Anther person said: “That was a long slow shake in Hastings.”

Earlier on Tuesday, a shallow “moderate” 4.7 magnitude earthquake has hit Milford Sound and Queenstown.
Craig Ryan, on Twitter, commented they were In a restaurant in Napier and felt the earthquake, everyone went quiet.
“Felt like saying it’s ok, I’m from Christchurch.”
