Some of the gloss has been taken off the Highlanders stunning fightback win over the Cheetahs this morning.
Loose forward Liam Squire went off injured with a broken thumb in the 45-41 come-from-behind victory in Bloemfontein.
Coach Tony Brown says Squire will likely miss six weeks, meaning a big blow to the All Blacks build-up to the Lions tour with Jerome Kaino and Kieran Read already racing the clock.
“Obviously with Kieran Reid out he was probably the next cab off the rank. Hopefully Kieran, him and Jerome Kaino can get back in time for the Lions.”
Tevita Li, Matt Faddes and Waisake Naholo took advantage of the Cheetahs being reduced to 14 men to steal today’s win.
The result handed the Highlanders (7-3) a sixth successive victory, equalling the best streak in their history and cementing their fourth placing in the New Zealand conference.
