Updated: 6:15am – Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho has stressed that he does not tolerate violence against women and children, and has called on people to take urgent action and inform him personally if police officers have not dealt with these cases as they should.

Qiliho says things cannot wait for days or weeks and urgent action is needed if police officers have not properly dealt with victims of domestic violence.

Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre Coordinator Shamima Ali

He has made this clear after comments made by the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre Coordinator Shamima Ali at the Family Violence Public Symposium that Nausori Police were not taking a complaint of a girl who was allegedly beaten up by her mother.

Ali has told Fijivillage that this happened more than 3 weeks ago and she will speak to senior police officers or the Commissioner soon.

Commissioner Qiliho says these issues should have been raised with him as soon as the alleged incident occurred.

He says generalised comments will not result in any solutions and does not help anyone.

We will have more on this issue later.
