Updated: 7:02am – Extra security will be on hand at tonight’s Rugby League World Cup match between Tonga and Samoa in Hamilton.

A violent brawl with up to 200 people erupted in South Auckland this week after a young fan was seen burning a Samoan flag.

Weapons such as machetes, poles and bottles were used as fans of both teams attacked each other.

Hamilton City Council H3 operations manager, Chad Hooker, said it’s important for fans to cast their differences aside.

“The key thing is about showing respect really. It’s about having respect for the occasion, for the teams and for everyone else that’s going to be attending the game.”

Superintendent, Sandra Manderson said a heightened police presence will be on hand at tonight’s match.

“We’ve got a lot of police working in the stadium, outside of the stadium and we’ve got a lot of police on the roads to make sure people drive safely.”
