Sayed-Khaiyum says this is not a good look for Fiji especially with tourism being the country’s biggest revenue earner.

He says tourists look at other destinations before making a choice and this includes taxi fares.

The Minister says there have been concerns raised regarding this matter.

“I have been told a number of occasions about tourists coming to Fiji who gets ripped off by taxi drivers. When the fare when you on the meter is probably seven dollars but they’re paying forty dollars or they’re paying fifty dollars. Now you’re killing the goose that lays the golden egg. Not everybody is lining up to come to Fiji.”

Sayed-Khaiyum says taxi drivers should be honest with their work.

“So by you ripping off people – that tourist would probably not come back to Fiji so what are you ultimately doing? You’re actually kicking your own bowl of income.”

The minister is calling on drivers to provide tourists with the correct fare shown on their taximeter.
