Updated: 8:13am – James Cameron’s 2009 ‘Avatar’ sequels are ready for production. Four sequels are said to be shot simultaneously. The first ‘Avatar’ sequel will release on December 18, 2020, and the next comes a year later, with the last two in December 2024 and 2025.
Filmmaker James Cameron has started the production in Manhattan Beach on the four ‘Avatar’ sequels he is shooting in succession. It will be the most expensive shoot of its kind, at an estimated collective budget expected to surpass $1 billion, reported Deadline. The epic sci-fi film franchise stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Cliff Curtis, Oona Chaplin and Joel David Moore.
The original ‘Avatar’ is the second most highest grossing film in the history of cinema, behind Cameron’s own ‘Titanic’. If there is any director who one can trust to cover the budget of their expensive movies, it’s James Cameron, but it is still unheard of four films with lots of computer imagery and graphics to be shot at the same time. Peter Jackson is one other filmmaker who shot three films in The Lord of the Rings trilogy simultaneously and released one film every year.
‘Avatar’, released in 2009, is set in mid 22th century. Humans have colonised Pandora, a habitable moon to mine unobtanium, a precious superconductor. The local race of people, blue-skinned Na’vi, are threatened by humans and their ambitions. Humans are sent as Na’vi ‘avatars’ (basically their consciousness is transferred to a genetically engineered Na’vi body) to interact with the Na’vi population to let humans mine the previous substance. The visual effects in the film were considered as a breakthrough although the story was deemed too simplistic.
Fox is releasing the first ‘Avatar’ sequel on December 18, 2020, and the next comes a year later, with the last two in December 2024 and 2025.
