A Ferrari driver told police his $290,000 supercar suddenly swerved before a messy crash in Auckland’s busy Victoria Park Tunnel.

The crash on July 20 caused huge delays and media speculation about whether the car was being test driven at the time, and now police have released the crash file to Stuff.

The driver told police: “I was in lane one after getting onto the motorway from the Wellington street on-ramp.

“All of a sudden the car started to swerve prior to the Victoria tunnel.”

The driver said he managed to keep the car as close to the left lane as possible to avoid other traffic.

“The vehicle hit the barrier before coming to a stop in lane two,” police added in the crash file.

Ferrari said its 4.5litre V8 model had a high performance antilock braking system and ‘F1 traction control’ and a top speed exceeding 325 km/h..

Police withheld some information to protect the driver’s privacy.

“Advanced traction control systems allow the tyres to spin right at the edge of traction to give the best performance possible so the car shouldn’t suddenly break loose if given the gas,” New Zealand Autocar said.

The 2013 Ferrari 458 Italia can reach 100km/h in 3.4 seconds, NZ Autocar added.

NZ Transport Agency at the time said the crash blocked the tunnel lane and caused extensive delays to “all motorists” in the area.

Delays continued for two and a half hours, NZTA said.

Ferrari said the 4.5litre V8 model had a high-performance anti-lock braking system, a “F1 traction control” and a top speed exceeding 325 km/h.

Stuff has left messages with an eyewitness and with a Ferrari dealership which reportedly was trying to sell the car at the time of the crash.

It was not immediately clear what if any further action authorities took after the crash or whether the car was on a test drive when the crash happened.
