Fire crews are fighting the last of a large bushfire in Wellsford, which threatened a local school.

Emergency services were called to the fire on Oruawharo School Rd near Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngaringaomatariki at 10:30am on Tuesday.

Six fire appliances, two helicopters and a command unit are now mopping up the blaze.

The school was evacuated by police as a precaution, a police spokesperson confirmed to Newshub.

“Police are in attendance in support of FENZ conducting a precautionary evacuation of a total of seven staff and students from the local school, Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngaringaomatariki,” they said.

“The staff and students have been taken to a local marae, where parents can collect them.

“The landowner is assisting police with enquires to establish what caused the fire.”

There are no reports of injuries so far.

Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngaringaomatariki did not respond to calls.
