It was initially recorded as a magnitude 4.4.

GeoNet appraised the shake as moderate.

In excess of 9000 individuals submitted “felt answers” to GeoNet, most in Christchurch yet some as far abroad as Akaroa, Kaiapoi and Oxford.

Lincoln man Shawn O’Brien said he heard the tremor first.

“It shook very hard,” he said.

I was thinking about getting up. The canines began yelping from nearby, a couple of them.”

The shaking went on for around 10 to 15 seconds, he said.
