Power has been restored to thousands of homes in Dunedin, Manawatū and Whanganui, where strong or severe winds downed trees and power lines yesterday.

More than 2600 properties were still without power across the North Island this morning.

About 1400 electricity customers were still dealing with a blackout across Whanganui and Manawatū, down from a peak of about 7000 in the early evening.

About 240 of its customers were also without power around Tauranga.

The lines company Powerco was working on the remainder, with most expected to have power restored between 10am and midday.

Meanwhile, in an update about 1am, Otago lines company Aurora Energy said outages persisted across the Taieri Plain, in the Fairfield area south of Dunedin, and in the southern suburbs of Forbury and Kew.

Other cuts earlier affecting suburbs right across Dunedin had now been resolved, it said.
