NZ: ‘Substantial’ flooding on Coromandel Peninsula after night of heavy rain

Heavy rain overnight has caused flooding on the Coromandel Peninsula.

There are reports of “substantial” flooding around Whangamata, Hikuai, Tairua and Pauanui, according to a statement released by Thames-Coromandel District Council.

The council says there are also reports of fallen trees and power cuts around Whangamata.

They say Civil Defence centres are being established in the event southern Coromandel residents need to evacuate their homes.

The centres will be at the Whangamata Town Hall and the Pauanui Community Centre.
