Parents in flood affected areas to use discretion when sending children to school

Updated: 10:06am – Parents are to use their own discretion to send their children to school for those affected by flood waters from last night.

This has been confirmed by the Ministry of Education as a Heavy rain warning remains in force for the whole of Fiji.

The Nadi Weather Office says that an active trough of low pressure with associated cloud and rain remains slow moving over the Fiji group and is expected to affect the group till later tomorrow night.

A flood warning still remains in force for the low lying areas, small streams and areas adjacent and downstream of Vatukacevaceva Station down to Rakiraki Town.

A flood warning is also in force for low lying areas, small streams and areas downstream of Toge Station to Ba Town, low lying areas, small streams and areas downstream of Navolau Station.

A flood alert still remains in force for low lying areas and small streams adjacent and downstream of Keyasi Station, Nairukuruku Station and downstream of Nasivi.

The Nadi weather office has also confirmed that water levels at Vatukacevacea Station was at 0.97m at 4am which is 0.52m below warning level and decreasing.

At Toge station water levels were at 3.56m at 4am which is 0.04m below alert level and decreasing.

Levels at Ba at FSC Mill was at 4.34m at 4am which is 0.84m above warning level and decreasing.

At the Keyasi Station water levels were at 3.36m at 4am which is 0.64m below alert level and decreasing, levels at Nairukuruku station were at 3.36m which is 0.01m above alert level and decreasing while levels at the Navolau Station were at 9.59m which is 1.59m above warning level and increasing.

Police have confirmed reports of flash flooding is being received from certain parts of the Western Division.

Police Commander West SSP Abdul Khan says that they have had to ask vehicle owners not to cross flooded areas and tell children not to swim during this time.

Members of the public are also requested to call the Western Division Command Center on 9905457 if they require any assistance.

Situation Report: 

Police have confirmed that all roads in Ba Town are under water and closed to all traffic.

Police Spokesperson, Ana Naisoro says that about 40 people are stranded with 17 vehicles at the Total Service Station due to flood waters that has affected the Ba Market and Ba Bus Stand.

Ba Town is currently experiencing rise in water levels that are close to 4‑5ft.

Other areas that are currently affected by flood waters and is closed to all traffic include, Vatulaulau Stage 2,  Soroko-ba Bridge, Namosau Bridge, Rarawai Bridge, Rarawai Cemetery Bridge Road, Maururu Bridge, Vutuni Bridge, Nasolo Bridge at Vatulaulau and Itatoko Flats.

Police have also confirmed that  Kings Road Yalalevu near Nestle is partly closed to traffic and Tuvu Bridge is not safe to travel.

Water levels are quickly receding in areas that are affected in Lautoka and Police say that Saru Bridge is open only to heavy goods vehicles.

Meanwhile, Lautoka resident, Ravin Chand says that students and other residents are stranded due to flood waters affecting Buabua bridge in Lovu.

Rukuruku Bridge in Tavua is under 3ft of water meanwhile, other roads and bridges is now open as water has receded and is now open to all traffic.

Qeleloa Bridge in Nadi is closed to light vehicles only.

In Navosa areas that are affected by flood waters include, Draiba bridge, Rabaraba bridge and Waidula bridge, while Matewale bridge is open only for heavy goods vehicles.

Qelema Settlement in Rakiraki is 3-4ft under water and is closed but is receding slowly while Nokonoko Qallau Road and Waimari Bridge is  under water and close to all traffic.

Naqoro Flats is also under water and is closed to all traffic, but Water Receding Slowly while Vunitogoloa Bridge is open to Heavy Goods Vehicles only.

Rakiraki is also experiencing unplanned Power Outage.

Fiji Electricity Authority says that there is not time frame as to when power will be restored as their technicians are currently working to rectify the situation.

The Korowere Bridge in Vatukoula is under water ans is only open to Heavy Goods Vehicles.
