Violence is Not OK says Anne Degia-Pala

Updated: 11:33am – New Zealand continues to see a steady rise in  family and sexual violence statistics.  “It has been at least three decades since I have worked for the  welfare of women and children of our diverse communities”. Yet, even In 2018 we continue to undermine gender violence and disregard the wellbeing of victims,” says Anne Degia-Pala QSM.  She formed EthNix Links Networks for ethnic women to come together and speak openly and ask for help.

“There is no shame is asking for help”, says Anne.   The cycle of violence continues in all societies; however the marginalized, minority and vulnerable communities suffer immensely. Social and economic distress including poverty and inequality together with inadequate support and lack of resources, undermine the wellbeing of communities. “We can just no longer continue with education programs for perpetrators only to see them reoffending.”, she says.   “Violence is NOT OK.

We can no longer band aid violence.”  “Structual inequalities and attitudes entrap women and men as well. Under a ‘joint venture’ approach, outlined recently by the Under-Secretary to the Minister of Justice (Domestic and Sexual Violence Issues) Jan Logie, chief executives from across the public sector will work together to deliver an integrated, whole-of-government approach to family violence and sexual violence. Ethnic communities welcome the collaborative strategy leading conversations around violence and sexual abuse.
