Updated: 6:19am – A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment after being convicted of assault and rape.
The man was convicted of one count of rape and one count of assault causing actual bodily harm.

The incident happened on 1st September this year and the victim was a 68-year-old woman.
While sentencing the man, Labasa High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo said that the accused and the complainant were neighbors and the accused abused his neighbors trust.
Justice Temo said that the man will have to serve a prison sentence to teach him not to abuse other people’s trust.
The man has a non-parole period of 11 years and has 30 days to appeal.
