UPDATED: 8:31am – Local councillors have been left to make the final call on another controversial issue.
Christchurch and Auckland councillors have voted against Easter Sunday trading, after about half of councils around the country voted to allow it.

The Government handed the issue over to councils, like it has done with water fluoridation. Massey University local government expert Andy Asquith believes the councils have been left to take the flak.
“There’s a school of thought that [leaving it up to Councils is] abdicating responsibility,” Mr Asquith said. “Central Government and Parliament should make these decisions – stand up and be counted.”
Auckland councillors have said the decision shouldn’t have been theirs to make.
