FIJI NEWS: Parenthood assistance program leads to increased birth registrations

Since the introduction of the Parenthood Assistance Program, the registration of births within two months of the newest Fijian been born has increased.

Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says if a child is registered within two months of its birth, it is deemed as “in-time-registration”.

He says it is considered late application if the child is registered two months after birth and fees are then applicable.

“In 2016 when the ministry of health through its system had 19,180 births, only 19.9% of children were registered within two months of the child being born. In 2017, out of the 19, 646 children born only 20.1% were registered within the two months.”

Sayed-Khaiyum says the Parenthood Assistance Program began in 2018 and Fiji had 19, 736 births and 33.4 percent of births were registered in the first two months.

He adds that in 2019, Fiji had 17, 913, 80 percent of the births were registered in the first two months.

Meanwhile, since the launch of the assistance program a total of 20,427 applications have been processed.
