Man sentenced to life imprisonment for Lokia murder

Updated: 6:15am – A 35‑year‑old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing 46‑year‑old Jai Prasad in Lokia Landing, Rewa.

High Court Judge, Justice Thushara Rajasinghe has ordered that Waisea Motonivalu will have to serve a minimum of 20 years in jail before any pardon could be considered.

The incident took place on 31st December last year.

Justice Rajasinghe highlighted that a high degree of force was used on the victim where Motonivalu had punched and kicked the 46 year old man.

Motonivalu had pleaded guilty to a count of murder.

Motonivalu had earlier pleaded guilty to a count of aggravated robbery and was sentenced to nine years and seven months imprisonment.

Another two people, Eroni Raivani and Niko Baleiwairiki were also charged with one count of murder and one count of aggravated robbery and they pleaded not guilty to both charges.

It is alleged that the three men brutally assaulted the fisherman before stealing a 15hp outboard engine.
