NATIONAL NEWS:- Six injured in two-car, head-on crash on State Highway 3, near Stratford

Six people have been injured, one critically, in a head-on crash on State Highway 3 in central Taranaki.

Emergency services were called to the scene, on Mountain Rd, Cardiff, between Bird Rd and Taylor Rd, just after 7am.

The crash occurred just after the 100km signs on the southern side of Stratford and about 1km from a passing lane.

A St John spokesman said six people had been injured. One is in a critical condition and is being flown to Wellington Hospital by the Taranaki Community Rescue Helicopter.

Another patient with serious injuries and four with moderate injuries are being taken to Taranaki Base Hospital by ambulance, he said.

Four ambulances a rapid response vehicle and the rescue helicopter had all been called to the scene, he said.

In an emailed response to questions, a police central communications spokeswoman said the highway appeared to be blocked.

Diversions are in place around the scene. It’s understood the police Serious Crash Unit has been called.
