Updated: 6:36am – National has criticised the new Government for going backwards in its plans for Christchurch’s Metro Sports facility.

New Christchurch Regeneration Minister, Megan Woods has ordered an urgent review of the facility, after finding out it was going to blow out its budget by $75 million.

She has suggested the review explore options like merging parts of the Multi-purpose Stadium and the Metro Sports facility.

But National spokesman, Matt Doocey said that was already rejected as an option many years ago due to poor urban planning.

“A super facility like that would put huge demand on transport, parking and associated infrastructure. I think this is a real over reach by the new Minister.”

As part of the last minute overhaul, Woods sacked the company in charge of building the facility and instead put the Crown-run agency Otakaro in charge.

Doocey has slammed the move as a solution looking for a problem as the project was already 80 per cent through the design stage.

“Work towards the time frame of 2021, and we can look forward to a fantastic end to the project which is the proposed Metro Sports Facility.”
