The Lonsdale Cup was first granted in 1961, with Sir Murray Halberg the debut beneficiary.

From that point forward it has been won by a large group of helpful New Zealanders who have spoken to our country with satisfaction and energy. Past champs incorporate Dame Valerie Adams, Lisa Carrington, Sir John Walker, Barbara Kendall, Sir Peter Snell and some more.

The Lonsdale Cup champ is chosen by the New Zealand Olympic President’s Council (business and wearing pioneers) and the New Zealand Olympic Committee Board.

The cup is a scale imitation of the first Queen Anne cup of a similar plan introduced by Lord Lonsdale during the 1911 Festival of Empire meeting between the United Kingdom, Canada and Australasia held to respect the increase of George V.
