Fiji: Hong Kong – Fiji eases past Japan

The Vodafone Fiji 7s side thumped Japan 36-nil in its first match at the Hong Kong tournament.

Fiji scored six tries in match, three in each half.

Nippy Jerry Tuwai grabbed a brace while Osea Kolinisau, Joeli Lutumailagi, Vatemo Ravouvou and Apisai Domolailai scored a try each.

Fiji led 19-nil at the break.

Coach Gareth Baber was pleased with the win and says his team has the depth to win in Hong Kong.

“It was a good win. The game plan was executed well but still some more work needs to be done in particular areas. The squad is in high spirits and we are hopeful this weekend.”

Fiji’s next match is against Wales at 5.12pm today after which they New Zealand in its last pool match at 9.12pm.

The Cup quarter-finals begin at 2.58pm tomorrow, Cup semi-finals start at 7.31pm and the Cup final is scheduled for 11pm.

In other matches, South Africa edged France 17-10, Canada beat Kenya 17-14, New Zealand defeated Wales, 19-7 USA managed a 14-7 win over Russia, England thumped Korea 52-nil while Australia edged Samoa 22-19.

Meanwhile, England’s Dan Norton has broken Kenya’s Collins Injera’s record to become the worlds all-time top try scorer.

Norton scored his 245th try yesterday against Korea.
